I recently got married and went to change my last name with the Social Security office. They asked me my city of birth, which I then told them. She looked at me like I was crazy and said "oh that's not what we have. We can't change your name unless you know your city of birth".

I left, and drove the 1/2 hour back home to find my birth certificate.... to drive back another 1/2 hour to prove the computer wrong. At least I wasn't dead according to a computer..

anyone ever had this happen??

yes, I have Leena. There is a provision in WI State Statutes 69:33 pertaining to adoption birth certificates that allows the Judge at time of adoption to change the real city of birth to "Match" that of the Adoptive parents; but only under certain circumstances and  if the Adopting parents make the request. Less than 5% of adoptions had this happen ( based on those I have had dealings with over the past 25 years) and when that happens, it makes a search for the siblings or birthfamily members difficult, if not impossible because finding an adoptive record, not knowing where the Adoption took place is near impossible.  It normally is filed where birth occurreed   So, it it possible, that based on your Social Security Number when issued ( as infant) it might not agree with Adoptive birth certificate.

But, in your case, where I found you for you Aunt/Birthfather...yours hadn't been changed so I can't imagine why they had it different unless they screwed up originally and somehow put into their records the city of your foster placement prior to the adoption, rather than your city of birth??

Very interesting.

According to her computer I was born in EC but I took my Chippewa County birth certificate in and proved the computer wrong.

I was born in Chippewa Falls, and my adoption took place in Eau Claire County, and all court things happened in Dunn County. I was assuming it had to do with that...

Thanks Mary for clearing this up for me!!!
